Have you ever imagined being able to just roll up your computer screen or television and just throw it in your backpack and take it with you? Are you slightly clumsy and would do well with a more durable screen for your phone? Well that time is almost here. LG and other companies are on the verge of making this a reality. LG’s rollable OLED display gives me hope for the potential that the near future could hold. LG recently showed off its new prototype at CES 2016. At the convention they showed off how their new display can be rolled while the screen still emits an image.
What is OLED?
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is an LED screen with the incorporation of an organic compound the lights up when an electric current passes through it.
What are the Advantages?
Some of the advantages of OLED is the ability to incorporate it into flexible plastic materials to create a flexible more durable screen as opposed to glass like older displays. The picture quality is much better than that of current displays. Also the cost of production will be much less once it is mass produced.
What are the Disadvantages?
The technology is still not at 100%. We can assume this based on the fact that it is still in the prototype phase. It is also currently expensive to manufacture these OLED screens. Also apparently the screens do not have the ability to maintain its picture for as long as LED screens can.
What Does LG’s Rollable OLED Display Mean for the Future?
Personally LG’s rollable OLED display makes me excited for the future. I believe that this is the first step towards extremely durable televisions, monitors and smartphones. I’m imagining smartphones with screens that will not smash when dropped, that are also flexible so that they will not get bent in your skinny jeans. Obviously the technology has not been created for a flexible touch screen as of yet but I believe we will be seeing it in it the not too distant future. As for what LG has created, its rollable OLED display is amazing that they have a working prototype. The next few goals will be working with the technology to improve screen life and reduce manufacturing costs. But this is definitely an amazing breakthrough in electronic display technology.
