Samsung has recently come up with a new concept for a smart contact lens that will link to your smartphone. This technology would allow for what they call “augmented reality,” hence the name AR Vision. This will lead to technology being integrated into all parts of the human body.

How Does it Work?

This smart contact lens requires the user to blink, as user input, and based on what each command entails it then translates that into an action. These commands then control a built in camera as well as other features.

The main issues they were finding is the ability to incorporate the camera and an antenna (to communicate with your smartphone).

This diagram shows how they plan to place the antenna and any other equipment around the iris as to not block your field of vision. It is also important to allow for as much oxygen permutation as to not cause irritation and dryness. The next issue was to incorporate a camera that doesn’t obscure your vision. The solution: a very thin camera. A group of Australian scientists have recently developed a camera that is 6.3 nm thick. Samsung plans on incorporating this camera into their product. They also plan to use bluetooth to have the lens talk to your smartphone.

You can learn more about it at TechNewsWorld or at Tech Trend Buzz. If you want to learn more about the Australian camera you can read the paper they published.

Comments and Opinions

AR Vision could be a step towards human interaction without a physical screen. Allowing everyone to be able to see and interact with the “screen” in front of them. If accompanied by some sort of gloves that could measure where your hands are and what they are doing, we could simulate a holographic environment that only you can see. This would allow for many more features and would increase privacy. I think that there are many great applications for this technology.
