Recently a company by the name of Waverly Labs released a new device. This device is an ear piece that automatically translates what people are saying as they are saying it. It deeply resembles the concept of the Babel Fish described in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. This device is called The Pilot.
How Does it Work?

This video shows that if you and a friend both have an earpiece then you can speak to each other and the earpiece will translate for you. They claim, that currently, their product can translate between five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. They anticipate they will have more languages available by fall 2017. This device connects to an app through your phone via Bluetooth. It hears what you are saying then sends your speech through the phone which translates it. After that the translated speech is sent to the other earpiece. Currently the ear pieces only work with a network connection and in pairs. The eventual goals are to have offline capabilities, as well as translation of surrounding speech without the need for a pair of earpieces.

The Pilot is an amazing concept. Imagine the possibilities of being able to have a conversation with anyone, anywhere is the world. This is what this device is the stepping stone towards. This will lead us into a more accepting and understanding future. If this technology is perfected it could improve international relations and eliminate any loss of information in translation.
